Tokyo Cheapo, everyone’s favorite guide to living or visiting Tokyo on a budget, has a made a great video introducing one of the city’s best neighborhoods.
Shimokitazwa, as Tokyo Cheapo say, is “a veritable cheapo’s paradise. Thrifting, vintage and secondhand shopping, hipster hangouts, live music, cheap restaurants — a calm bohemian neighbourhood in the heart of Tokyo.”
The video features Tokyo Cheapo founder Chris Kirkland and YouTuber Angela An taking the viewer on a whirlwind tour of some of the best secondhand clothes stores and hangouts in the area.
As we have reported before, Shimokitazawa is being redeveloped by Odakyu as a prime real estate area. As such, the immediate station area has started to lose its previous down-to-earth feel and a more anonymous, generic facade is emerging. Perhaps in a generation’s time, Shimokita will have lost its vintage, bohemian groove.
What better time, then, to head on down and check it out before all those thrift shops are gone?
